What Is Medly AI?

Medly AI is an education technology company that provides AI-powered tutoring and exam preparation. Its platform offers personalized feedback, adaptive learning, and curriculum-aligned practice for students preparing for exams such as GCSE, A-Level, IB and SAT.

The Market Need for AI-Powered Tutoring

Private tuition remains a significant financial hurdle for many families. According to the Sutton Trust, traditional 1-on-1 private tutoring in the UK typically costs between £40 and £80 per hour. This price barrier often restricts personalized academic support to affluent households, contributing to the persistent educational attainment gap.

Medly AI aims to address this by providing scalable, AI-powered tutoring that offers students immediate, personalized feedback on practice questions. By offering a digital alternative to human coaching, the platform provides personalized exam preparation without relying on traditional one-to-one tutoring.

How the Medly AI Platform Works

Founded by former NHS doctors Dr. Paul Jung and Dr. Kavi Samra, this AI platform was developed to function as an interactive digital learning companion. The system utilizes a proprietary architecture that integrates large language models with pedagogical frameworks to guide students through complex subjects.

Key technical features include:

  • Automated Marking: Provides instant feedback on open-ended exam questions, detailing how to earn marks in line with official board criteria.

  • Handwriting Recognition: Students can use tablets to input mathematical equations and chemical formulas, simulating a physical exam environment.

  • Adaptive Learning: The software tracks individual student performance to identify knowledge gaps and adjusts the difficulty of future practice modules in real time.

  • Curriculum Alignment: Content is mapped to major UK and international boards, including GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, and the International Baccalaureate.

Academic Outcomes and Government Engagement

Since its public launch in October 2023, Medly AI has reached more than 400,000 students. Regarding academic performance, the company’s 2025 GCSE results data found that 74 percent of surveyed students improved their grades while using the platform, with 40.5 percent improving by two or more grades. These results were based on responses from 626 students, with an analytical sample of 398 students.

In June 2026, Medly AI was selected for the AI Tutoring Tools Pioneers Programme, a UK government initiative led by the Department for Education. This Government programme provides research funding to evaluate how artificial intelligence in education can support attainment for pupils in schools with higher rates of disadvantage. A randomized controlled trial of more than 1,000 pupils is currently underway as part of this initiative, with results pending publication.

Global Expansion and Future Roadmap

With the new $8 million seed funding, Medly AI is shifting its focus toward international growth. The startup has already launched SAT preparation modules for students in the United States and intends to introduce Advanced Placement (AP) and ACT study tracks by the end of 2026.

Strategic Priorities for 2026–2027:

  • Q3–Q4 2026: Roll out comprehensive AP and ACT modules for the US market.

  • Q4 2026: Enhance marking engines to better handle multi-step scientific and mathematical proofs.

  • Q1 2027: Scale pilot programs through the DfE’s Pioneers Programme.

  • 2027: Adapt platform architecture for additional European and Commonwealth curricula.

The funding provides the capital necessary for Medly AI to continue refining its AI learning platform as it expands its footprint as a significant provider of digital exam preparation technology.
