Who Was Professor Jason Arday?

Professor Jason Arday became Cambridge University’s youngest Black professor in 2023. He joined the Faculty of Education as Professor of the Sociology of Education, specializing in race, sociology, and education.

His journey into academia was unusual. Diagnosed with global developmental delay and autism in early childhood, Arday did not speak until age 11. He learned to read and write in his late teens before building his academic career.

Research Misconduct Allegations

In the summer of 2026, external commentators raised concerns about Arday’s past publications. The allegations included questions about citation practices and text duplication.

  • Arday denied the plagiarism allegations.

  • He had previously stated that academic misconduct panels at other institutions found no plagiarism or academic misconduct.

  • The claims led to public discussion and online scrutiny.

Resignation and Death

Arday resigned from his Cambridge post on August 5, 2026, amid public scrutiny surrounding his departure from the university. He died at his London residence on August 14, 2026, nine days later.

His death prompted wider discussion across higher education about institutional duty of care, race equality and the pressures academics may face during intense public scrutiny. The controversy surrounding Jason Arday also brought questions about academic integrity and institutional support into public discussion.

What Will the Jason Beer Review Examine?

Cambridge University commissioned Jason Beer KC to carry out a thorough, evidence-based review. Beer is widely recognized for his role as lead counsel to the Post Office Horizon IT inquiry.

An independent panel of four experts in higher education governance, research integrity, equality, and inclusion will support him.

The inquiry investigates five primary areas:

  • Academic Recruitment: Reviewing the process used to appoint Arday as professor.

  • Academic Support: Examining induction, mentoring, and support for new professors.

  • Misconduct Allegations: Assessing how Cambridge handled research misconduct claims.

  • Staff Welfare: Reviewing support for academics facing public scrutiny.

  • Equality and Inclusion: Examining race equality, neurodiversity and disability support.

The review will examine Cambridge’s institutional decisions and procedures. It will not investigate Arday himself, determine liability or replace the work of the coroner.

How the Two Parts of the Jason Arday Review Differ

Cambridge divided the inquiry into two distinct sections to examine immediate care alongside long-term governance: The findings from Part One will also inform the wider structural evaluation carried out in Part Two.

Part Two is expected to conclude within six months of the establishment of its independent panel. Jason Beer KC will determine the review’s methodology, findings and recommendations independently of Cambridge’s senior leadership.
