Who Is Jignesh Patel?
Jignesh Patel is a computer scientist whose work focuses on data systems, database management, and large-scale data processing. Before his appointment, he served as interim head of Carnegie Mellon’s Computer Science Department, a role he assumed in 2025. He joined the university’s faculty in 2023.
Patel completed his undergraduate engineering studies at IIT (BHU) Varanasi and earned his graduate degrees in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research examines ways to improve how people access, process, and analyse complex datasets, including through natural-language interfaces.
His academic work combines core computer science research with practical applications. At Carnegie Mellon, he has also contributed to undergraduate computing education and the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools.
What Is the CMU Miami Project?
Carnegie Mellon plans to establish a new campus in Miami focused on interdisciplinary research and education. The project aims to bring researchers together to address major societal challenges rather than organise teaching and research solely around traditional academic departments.
Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel and founder of Griffin Catalyst, pledged $3 billion to the university. Of this amount, $2 billion will support the Miami campus, while $1 billion will strengthen the Pittsburgh campus. The Pittsburgh allocation includes $500 million for the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science.
The university expects the Miami campus to begin enrolling students in 2028, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
Patel’s Entrepreneurial Experience
Patel has combined academic research with entrepreneurship throughout his career.
- He has co-founded four data and software companies.
- Locomatix, one of his ventures, developed mobile data-tracking technology and was acquired by Twitter in 2013.
- He co-founded DataChat, which enables users to analyse data through natural-language queries.
- At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he supported computer science entrepreneurship through initiatives connecting research with commercial applications.
His experience in research and startup development aligns with Carnegie Mellon’s plans to connect academic work with practical solutions.
What Will Jignesh Patel Lead as Carnegie Mellon Miami Campus Dean?
As founding dean and vice president, Patel will help establish the campus’s academic direction, recruit faculty and develop partnerships. Carnegie Mellon’s planned research model centres on four broad areas.
- Human Health and Biological Discovery: Applying computing and scientific research to improve understanding of disease and advance medicine.
- National Security and Strategic Capabilities: Developing technologies related to cybersecurity, robotics and other strategic challenges.
- Energy and Climate Resilience: Addressing energy systems, climate risks, and sustainability through research and technological innovation.
- Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Transformation: Applying automation, robotics and computing to improve industrial processes.
The university aims to use interdisciplinary research to connect these areas with real-world problems.
What University Leaders Say
Carnegie Mellon President Farnam Jahanian highlighted Patel’s role in shaping the campus’s academic mission and research priorities in the university’s official announcement
Ken Griffin also praised Patel, saying Ken Griffin stated:
“Dr. Patel is a distinguished scholar and successful entrepreneur who knows how to turn ideas into impact. His leadership will accelerate CMU Miami’s rise as a magnet for world-class talent and a powerful engine of discovery for our city and our nation.”
Patel has described CMU Miami as an opportunity to begin with society’s challenges and develop effective ways to solve them.
“CMU Miami is an opportunity to start with the challenges facing society and figure out how to solve them in the most effective way. That has been a theme throughout my teaching and research career: turning ideas into results that make a difference. From the foundational research all the way to real-world implementation, that’s what CMU does. That’s what we want to build in Miami. And that is what society needs too now more than ever.”
What Happens Next?
Jignesh Patel, the Carnegie Mellon Miami campus dean, will move from his interim leadership role in Pittsburgh to focus on developing the new campus.
Carnegie Mellon has named Professor Phil Gibbons interim head of its Computer Science Department while the university searches for a permanent successor.
The next steps include securing regulatory approvals and developing the campus’s academic and operational plans. The university is targeting 2028 for its first students to arrive.
Patel’s appointment gives Carnegie Mellon a designated leader for its planned Miami expansion. The Carnegie Mellon Miami campus dean will help guide the project as the university works toward its research and teaching goals.
